No one is born with “perfect” looks. And yet, some gals seem to “have it going on” when it comes to looking great.
Take me, for example! I’m a fat, fat, fattie-fat; my lips are lopsided; my lower teeth are crooked; my skin is ruddy; and my hair is uncontrollable!
But here I am.
I’m the Head Editor of a Fashion & Lifestyle magazine, I get compliments on a near-daily basis, I’m frequently asked for Beauty advice, and a Russian model once told me that I “take the best selfies [she’s] ever seen.”
Not too shabby, right?
Over the years, I’ve come up with my nine “divine” tips for looking great, even if you’re not perfect. Here they are, for your reading pleasure:
Our bodies are comprised of mostly water. You’ve probably heard that before, but it’s absolutely true. And worth pointing out because, as a part of looking great, you must absorb enough water to keep your body balanced.
When the water levels in your body become too low, you get dehydrated.
Dehydration is BEAUTY DEATH to your looks. It turns skin tight (not in a good way), flaky, and overly dry. Ick.
Not to mention not getting enough water will make your skin oily on TOP of being dry. Yes. At the same time. Isn’t that gross? But producing extra oils is your skin’s natural defense mechanism against overly-dry skin.
And, no. You can’t just moisturize your skin with creams and hope for the best. It’ll help a little bit (every woman over 25 should own a bottle of moisturizer!), but REAL skin moisture comes from within.
Eat your veggies! And your fruits. And some nuts.
Basically, eat all those healthy things your mom used to nag you to eat when you were growing up. They do wonders for your looks!
Avoid salts, sugars, and excess oils as much as you can. You don’t need to cut them out of your diet completely (your body needs a bit of salt, for example!); but consume them in moderation otherwise you could end up looking “puffy.”
Speaking of puffiness… Also be aware of food allergens and sensitivities. It’s hard to look your best when you’re bloated up and covered in hives. Take it from someone who knows from experience!
This is the one I struggle with, as you may have guessed if you read my “4 Tricks to Treat Tired Eyes” article. However, no amount of makeup can make up for a great night’s sleep.
According to the medical professionals over at WebMD, sleep:
· Reduces wrinkles.
· Gives your skin a healthy “glow.”
· Makes your eyes bright (instead of puffy, red, sunken, or dark-circled).
· Helps with better, fuller, hair growth.
· Gives you an overall “happier” appearance.
· Increases the chances of your beauty products working right and staying on longer.
This is another one I struggle with, but it really does help, when you can force yourself to do it.
Exercise increases your circulation, which makes your skin look and feel healthier; AND it increases your endorphins (your body’s “happy” chemical) so you FEEL great afterward.
Nothing helps you LOOK good quite like FEELING good.
Not to mention, exercise helps you stay healthy weight-wise. I’m cute for a chubby chick, but I could be so much cuter if I trimmed down a bit… Not just aesthetically, but because I’d be healthier.
Take a shower or a bath. Brush your hair. Brush your teeth. Trim your nails. Shave or wax where needed. And, please, wear deodorant.
Change your clothes once a day (or, at the very least, wear clean underwear each and every day). And don’t forget the little details like scrubbing your ears, washing your feet, and cleaning where “the sun don’t shine.”
Even though none of us are “perfect” beauty goddesses, we each have a few features that are pretty darn nice. What are yours?
Use clothing and makeup to draw attention to your favorite features, while drawing attention away from the features you’d rather hide.
Figure out what clothing cuts work best for you, and what makeup tricks you can use to enhance your features.
Remember: Makeup is meant to accentuate the looks you already have, not create a brand new look out of nothing (unless you want to look like you’re in costume).
This goes along with number six on the list. Even the most beautiful members of society have aspects of themselves they’d rather not be seen.
Dress for your body size (I wrote some tips for plus-sized women HERE), and wear appropriate makeup looks.
Knowing what camera angles work for you is a bonus when taking selfies as well. For my fellow chubsters, I recommend holding the camera slightly above you. ;)
Your mama was right: posture makes perfect.
Not only does good posture ooze confidence (sexy!!), but it will help everything about your body fall into place. Your boobs will look bigger, your waist will look smaller, your face will look slimmer, and your shoulders will look stronger.
A smile is an accessory you can wear with any outfit, and it completes any makeup look.
Whether you go for closed-lips or flash your teeth is up to you.
A smile will INSTANTLY brighten up your appearance, and even help to elevate your mood.
That’s right. Even if you don’t feel like smiling, do it anyway. The act of smiling tricks your brain into thinking you’re happy – and then it starts producing chemicals to actually make you happy. (Talk about “fake it ‘til you make it,” am I right?).
When it comes down to it, real beauty comes from the inside – from your attitude.
To quote one of my favorite Roald Dahl books (The Twits):
A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.
Now, go out and be lovely. The world needs your personal brand of beauty. :)
