This year in November, it will be my 14 year wedding anniversary! Time sure does fly by quickly! It feels like yesterday, we were just dating and now years later we've got 3 kids and are BUSY!
What I realized over the years is in order to remain close with your spouse, you truly need to put in an effort. The sparks don't come if you cant put in effort. Your spouse and you deserve the best marriage, so work at it!
Life with kids definitely gets in the way of quality time with your spouse. I feel like my relationship with my husband is good. It is because we make plans with each other to “date” again.
I have compiled some ideas for you to implement in your marriage to keep you and your spouse close and in a good place.
This point doesn't need to be extravagant. Simply going on a walk with your spouse will do. I like to go to movies with my husband or out to dinner. We usually compromise and do one or the other but either way we are taking the time out to spend with each other. Date nights are extremely important.
So, I will be the first to admit, I'm not the greatest at this but your spouse will appreciate the effort and will probably think you're super adorable for trying. This can also mean that you're complimenting your spouse more. Tell them they look pretty or handsome. It will make them happy and also boost confidence!
I don't mean put yourself last! I just mean, sometimes it is nice to be put ahead of your spouse's wants and needs, right? If you guys are constantly putting each others needs ahead of your own, your marriage is going to be fabulous! The kindness tends to spread like wildfire so give this a try and see how things work out. Remember that saying, “you catch more flies with honey?“, this is the same thing with your spouse. Be the sweetest honey out there and see how things turn out for you!
This can be easier said than done, right? Sometimes, you're thinking to yourself, what is my husband up to now or what on earth is he thinking? I do this all the time but I do try to not voice all my negativity to him because I can see that when I do this, the atmosphere gets deflated and everything feels negative around me. I hate that feeling of negativity. If you've got nothing nice to say, then don't say anything at all. It all comes down to respect. If you're both treating each other with respect then you'll be able to maintain a healthy relationship but both of you need to be doing this for it to work.
Since I have been married for almost 14 years, I can tell you that my marriage is NOT perfect! It is constant work and compromise! Sometimes, I want to rip my husbands head off. I think though, if I didn't feel this way at times, I would not be a normal human being. It is OK for you to struggle sometimes with your spouse but as long as you work it out and basically “date” your spouse, you'll remember why you got married in the first place.
I hope you have found this article to be helpful and I would love to know if you implement any of these pointers in your marriage.
