How 80s Inspired Outfits Are Making A Comeback

Fashion always works in cycles with some of yesteryears ideas popping up when you least expect it. So, when the Spring Summer 2018 catwalks showcased a variety of 80s inspired outfits with everything from shoulder pads to shell-suits, we took note on how to bring the glamour and glitz of the 80s into your own everyday attire.

Power padding

If 80s inspired outfits are known for one thing, it’s padded shoulders. This was obvious on the catwalks with Saint Laurent par Anthony Vaccarello, Gucci and Isabel Marant showcasing pieces with oversized and asymmetric shoulders.

If you want to try the look, learn how to balance out broad shoulders with a belt nipping you in at the waist which will also accentuate hourglass figures. Keep your hairstyle simple to stop you looking top-heavy. Or, find pieces with feminine detailing if the more-masculine look is a little out of your comfort zone.

The glitterati

If there’s one thing the 80s knew how to do right, it was decadence and glitter focussed style! While we don’t suggest wearing a full length glitter dress to work “a la Dynasty”, you can effortlessly add a little sparkle to your outfit by keeping the rest of the look minimal.

Sling a sequinned jacket over a neutral jumpsuit, or go for sparkly dresses with a high neckline so you don’t to worry about a necklace.

Racing stripes

Athleisure is big at the moment, so you won’t be the only one rocking sportswear chic. With relaxed, loose items that are easy to throw on at the heart of this trend, you’re bound to find something perfect for the weekend.

Go for stripes down the side of trousers to give the illusion of height, or block colours to give your outfit a pop of colour.

Bling big or go home

In 80s inspired outfits, big bling is always better. It was the era for chunky bracelets, giant gems, gold galore and diamonds diamonds diamonds!

Make the most of this trend by seeing if any older family have inexpensive jewellery they’d lend you for a night on the town, invest in some colourful costume jewellery or liven up a simple dress or blouse with a statement sparkly necklace.
