Fashion evolves constantly – changing everything from colour, cut and cloth to size and shape. Yet, one theme that never fails is monochrome. The ever elegant pairing of black and white is one that should be easy to do as these are the colour staples of most wardrobes. It, however, requires the right style to make them work effectively. Here are some of the ways to make monochromatic fashion work for you.

In theory, finding suitable monochrome work outfits shouldn’t be hard as many jobs have a black, white and grey dress code in place. However, finding one that helps you look smart and professional is the key. Think tailored dark trousers with loose white shirts and a smart black jacket to finish. Nude or muted accessories bring the outfit together and will keep you looking sleek and sharp.

Black and white may seem restrictive, but they can actually be a great way of expressing yourself when you want to let your hair down. You can’t go wrong with a monochrome polka dot dress or blouse, or using black detailing to really make a white shirt pop. You can also experiment with stripes, checks or prints to play up your fun side, and use metallic accessories and a bold red lipstick to notch up the evening glam.

The weekend

This is where you can bend the rules. While black jeans go with just about anything, wearing blue jeans works equally well with black and white pieces – like a classic white t-shirt and a timeless black leather jacket for a ‘just thrown on’ look to keep you chic. This is a perfect example of monochromatic summer fashion as you can lose the jacket as soon as the sun starts shining.

The holiday

You may think that surely a vacation calls for colour - right? While you can definitely enjoy vivid colours on a trip away, there are some amazingly stylish monochrome pieces out there begging for the beach – whether in bikini form or bold sandals. A classic and super easy to wear outfit can be made from a flowing white maxi dress, paired with a floppy black beach hat. Perfect for a poolside bar or a walk around historic ruins, you’ll be a monochromatic fashion dream!
