'Millennial Pink' - A Color That Marked an Entire Generation

We’ve all heard of it because it’s all over social media. What exactly is ‘millennial pink’? Where did it come from? Why is it so popular?

Every generation has their own singer, actor, celebrity, music genre etc. But, can a color mark an entire generation? Apparently, it can. You can easily say that pink is no longer a feminine color. We see men wearing it, interior designers implementing it to people’s bedrooms, living rooms, kitchens etc. Even beauty brands are recognizing ‘millennial pink’ as a color. Companies are rushing to create that dusty shade of pink everybody wants to wear on their face.


The whole craze about this shade of pink started with the invention of the ‘rose gold’ iPhone. Everybody wanted it-designers, influencers and trendsetters including. These groups of people determine what is ‘in’ and what is not.

After Apple released the ‘rose gold’ iPhone, the color became so popular even the famous movie director Wes Anderson implemented it into his movies. His movie ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ made headlines with its delicious and mouth-watering pinky scenes. Nobody expected Anderson to put so much pink into his scenes. The man knew what was he doing.

The people behind the color.

Teenagers started calling this shade of pink – ‘millennial pink’. They felt like ‘millennials’ invented it. And in a way, they did. ‘Millennial pink’ wouldn’t have become a ‘thing’ if the kids of today didn’t accept it. There were so many trends but none of them caught fire like ‘millennial pink’ did.

Not to mention celebrities went crazy for it. Celebrities like Kim, Kylie, Gigi etc. started wearing 'millennial pink' in every single way possible. Kim even said it was her favorite shade of pink. Even restaurants started preparing food and desserts in pink.

Even sports brand moguls like Nike and Addidas started launching new lines in pink. Who said you can’t be trendy when you’re sweaty?

But the main question remains, why did ‘millennial pink’ became so popular and stayed for so long?


We believe the main reasons lay behind what this color evokes in people. Color has often times been associated with culture. Pink is considered to symbolize something innocent in Western culture. It is been worn by brides, babies etc. In India, pink is considered to a mourning color and it is been worn by widows.

Nevertheless, pink is mostly regarded to symbolize something delicate. You can dye a snake in pink and nobody would run away from it.

There is a tendency to believe that pink is a feminine color. Luckily, today those borders between men and women are starting to crumble. Men love wearing pink and women love wearing blue. Color is not restricted to a gender. Women work in coal mines and men are babysitters. Gender equality is finally bringing down restrictions and liberating people without judgment.

‘Millennial Pink’ is a trend that marked the 2000’s. In a weird way united every art form together. This trend even united men and women, old and young. ‘Millennial Pink’ is here to stay and we are happy with it. Thanks, millennials.
